5 mountaineers drown, 9 others hurt in Tarlac


SAN JOSE, Tarlac: At least five persons died while nine others were hurt when they were swept away by a strong current while crossing a river on Sunday afternoon. Senior Supt. Alex Sintin, Tarlac provincial police director, said the victims were identified as Mark Raven Villanueva, Rocky Sumalinog, Jose Bernadette Ramirez, Jo Marie San Diego and Dooren Adriano. He added that the victims were part of the 54 mountaineers that conducted an outreach activity in Sitio Baag in Barangay San Pedro. Sintin said the group distributed school supplies to children in the Aeta community and were on their way to the town proper when the incident took place at around 3 p.m. PNA
