Five New People’s Army (NPA) fighters were killed following an encounter with 41st Infantry Battalion troopers in Barangay Guinguinabang, Lacub, Abra Thursday morning.
The encounter transpired when soldiers spotted the rebel band while conducting routine security operations.
In the ensuing firefight, five rebels were killed with their weapons being recovered by government forces.
No casualties was reported on the government side. As of this posting, the firefight is still ongoing.
Prior to the incident, villagers tipped off the presence of the NPAs who are on extortion activities and collecting foodstuffs from the residents.
“The civilians themselves told us about the presence of the NPAs in their village. The barangay folks said that the NPAs who are extorting from them are not from Abra but from other areas that’s why the people are really distrustful of them,” 41st Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Virgilo Noora said. PNA
