BAGUIO CITY: Five soldiers from the 81st Infantry Battalion were killed and five others were wounded after members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) ambushed them in Barangay Namitpit, Quirino town, Ilocos Sur on Thursday night. Though the Armed Forces refused to name those killed and hurt in the incident, Ilocos Sur Police Information Officer Leland Benigno confirmed that the government forces were waylaid while going back to their bases. Leland said the troopers came from a joint patrol in Patungcaleo, Quirino, where rebels torched down an equipment of the South Ocean Mining Corporation last week. After the patrol, Benigno said, the government convoy’s first vehicle was fired at, killing the five and wounding another five. “We are still completing the account,” Benigno said citing sketchy reports. He refused to say if the government is doing a pursuit or a counter-offensive against the communist rebels.
