You can also use the Internet to visit social media pages to keep you up to date on what’s happening in your circles or to keep in touch with your friends. Also, you can use it to search for the latest videos of your favorite musicians, read car reviews, look at works of your favorite painters or even search for inspiration for your weekend D.I.Y. [do it yourself]project. Among all things, the Internet is your best pal if you want to stay informed on what’s happening in the world—the latest news.
The idea of newspapers creating an online version started in the late 1990s but few generated income until 2006. Now, the world is different. As people became more reliant on the Internet, the game changed for almost everybody even for newspapers.
The Manila Times Online is among them. The Times’ static website started also in the late 1990s but received minimal attention from netizens. It became a dynamic website in 2005 but was not fully utilized until the last quarter of 2013.
Here are some facts about The Manila Times Online:
1. Majority of our readers are yuppies.
The Manila Times is the oldest, English-language newspaper in the country—established in 1898—yet majority of our current online readers and followers were born in the 1980s and 1990s. Data collected by The Manila Times’ online team revealed that 16 percent of our readers are aged 25 to 34 years old.
Next to them are people in their late teens and early adulthood, aged 18 to 24, at twelve percent. Holding the third spot are middle-aged people, 35 to 44 years old, who comprise 10 percent of our online reading population.
Adults, within the 45 to 54 year-old age group, hold the fifth spot at five percent. They are followed by young teens—13 to 17 years old—at three percent, outnumbering people aged 55 to 64 years old who comprise only two percent of our net fans population. Last on the list are people aged 65+ at one percent.
We are dealing with young readers.
2. We have readers in all seven continents
As of September 15, 2015, data from Facebook Insights showed that there are 203, 295 people following us in the Philippines via Facebook—114, 828 of our readers living in key cities in the country.
Apart from our growing local prominence in the virtual world, we also have readers as far as Africa.
Data showed that we have a relatively big reading population in foreign cities like Riyadh (3,689), Hong Kong (3,124), Dubai (2,689), Kuwait (2,575), Singapore (2,443), Jeddah (1,627), Doha (1,613), Abu Dhabi (1,275) and Kuala Lumpur (1,029).
Our biggest reading group outside the country is based in the United States. Based on our record, there are 8,101 The Manila Times Online readers scattered across the United States.
Saudi Arabia-based readers are second in our list with 7,991. Third is another middle-east country United Arab Emirates with a reading population of 4,468. Hong Kong follows with 3,528, just a few notch higher than Kuwait with 3,057.
The rest of our faithful followers are scattered across the globe. If we are going to add all of these figures, we can say that we have about 80,000 committed readers (excluding those who are not liking or subscribing to our page) based outside the country.
3. Our online reach is all ‘Organic’
We are not dealing with healthy, no-fertilizer salad ingredients here. We are talking about online reach. “Boosted post” (money involved) vs. “Organic post” (no money involved).
Yes, that’s true. All of our likes, shares, and online activity are unpaid. We do not and have never subscribed to any “boost this post” campaign.
Compared to other news pages, the numbers we are boasting are small. Our followers are just pegged to close to 300,000. However, there are more people who drop by our page each day and maybe forgot to hit the like button before leaving. Those people are not included in that 300,000.
There are days when our ‘organic reach’ would shoot up close to half a million. That’s at least 200,000 additional clicks, and we are talking about organic reach here.
Our record organic reach so far? 2,731,676.
Who says you need to pay a couple of thousand pesos to relay your message to close to 3 million people? Money helps but sometimes “interesting” is enough.
4. We have more male readers than women
With our current population, data revealed that 51 percent of our loyal fans are male, the rest are female.
Thirty-eight percent of our female population actively comments, likes, and shares our articles. Men are more engaged to The Manila Times Online.
5. Our fans are nocturnal readers
Often, the older generation read their news early in the morning. We remember our grandparents reading their newspaper early in morning, in the breakfast table, after their breakfast. It has become their ritual to read the news before they start the day.
Surprisingly, the younger generation differs from them. Our records show that most of our fans visit our site at night. Insights showed that our readers are most active from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. everyday.
