The South Superhighway in Makati City was closed to traffic on Tuesday after a steel beam from the Skyway construction site collapsed, injuring five workers.

The workers — Norman Nicolas, Ronald Degamo, Jerwin Deocarisa, JR Balaquidan and Guillermo Santor Jr. — were rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila for treatment.

The steel beam blocked the road, creating heavy traffic on both lanes.

Personnel from the Manila Development Authority and the Makati Rescue Personnel and the Public Safety Department were deployed to assist motorists.

Project contractor DM Consunji Inc. (DMCI) said a portion of the rebar cage accidentally tipped over, causing debris to fall over the north and south lanes.
