Palawan: A private resort is in hot water after the Palawan Provincial Law Enforcement Task Force rescued at least 525 Hawksbill sea turtles Wednesday morning inside their premises. The law enforcement group confiscated the turtles at the Kaliksi Island Resort in Roxas, Palawan. The authorities seized 413 hatchlings, 112 juvenile turtles and 63 turtle eggs. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Hawksbill turtles as critically endangered species. Their colored and patterned shells make them highly-valuable and commonly sold as “tortoiseshell” in markets. The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development said they do not issue permits for capturing and growing Hawksbill turtles.
