BAGUIO CITY: Chanum Foundation’s Tam-awan Village takes center stage as the country’s summer capital plays host to the 5th International Arts Festival starting on Wednesday.
The five-day event held in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is carrying this year’s theme Cordilleran Stories: Rituals and Beliefs.
The Tam-Awan Village Artists is hosting workshops on mask making, water color and coffee painting, mono print design, bamboo carving and solar drawing instructional sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.
Also scheduled on Wednesday at Ayala Museum’s Kisame Exhibit: Visions of Heaven on Earth set at 4 p.m. at the Tam-awan Village Gallery with curators Ken Esguerra & Father Harold Toralba.
Senga, a Mt. Province Ritual asking the gods for prosperity, will open on Friday with a ceremonial tree planting at the Tam-awan Village trail.
United States Embassy Cultural Affairs Officer Kristin Kneedler will discuss US-Filipino ties in her presentation Heritage Conservation Projects in the Philippines while South African Ambassador Agnes Nyamande-Pitso will also share her country’s rituals and beliefs.
On Saturday morning, former Benguet Vice Governor Wasing Sacla of Kibungan will speak on the Kankana-ey Belief System and home Rituals and Lawyer Alfonso Aroco of Kabayan, Benguet will tackle The art of Science of the Ibaloi Oral Tradition.
In the afternoon, Engr. Orlando Abinion of the National Museum will recount the journey of Benguet’s greatest hunter-warrior in his talk Saga of Apo Anno . . . The Mummy.
Elsie Padernal of Visayas region will speak on The Different Rituals of Panimu Sulod Bukidnon followed by Datu Linggi lnhagdan Modesto Pocol of Mindanao’s discussion on Higaonon Beliefs . . . God, Spirits, Nature and Man.
Padernal will join Visayan elders in performing the Panimu ritual while Pocol will also perform the Panulakon ritual with elders from Mindanao.
On May 11, Ifugao Representative Teodoro Brawner Baguilat Jr. will talk about the Preservation of the Ifugao Culture and Heritage in the Modern Time while Ventura Bitot of Mountain Province will discuss Traditional Prayers in relation to Literature towards Performing Arts.The Benguet rituals of thanksgiving will cap the festival.
