SIX policemen were killed while 10 others were wounded in an ambush staged by suspected communist rebels in Baggao town, Cagayan on Tuesday morning.
Sketchy reports reaching the PNP Operations Center in Camp Crame showed that the encounter took place around 10 a.m. in Barangay Santa Margarita as the Regional Public Safety Battalion-2 was conducting combat patrol operations.
Two sections of the unit under Supt. Juan Aggasid and Senior Insp. Balisi were conducting combat patrol operation when they were ambushed.
Some 63 policemen were on board one patrol vehicle when New People’s Army guerrillas detonated an improvised explosive device by the main road on Km. 19 before opening fire on the police officers.
The initial exchange of gunfire lasted for about one hour although information reaching Camp Crame late in the afternoon indicated that fighting was still ongoing around 4 p.m.
Two Air Force Huey helicopters were deployed to reinforce the beleaguered policemen and to evacuate the wounded from the ambush site.
Identities of the fatalities were not immediately known but the report named one of the injured as Police Officer 1 Layugan.
