THE Philippine Army slammed the New People’s Army’s (NPA) continued use of landmines in ambushing government troops in a thickly populated area in Iloilo province. Six soldiers and a civilian were wounded in such an ambush on Monday. Lt. Col. Enriqueto Deocadez Jr., commander of the Army’s 82nd Infantry Battalion based in Miag-ao, Iloilo, said his troops were heading toward Antique on board two military trucks when about 10 NPA rebels detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) along the highway of San Joaquin at about 3:50 a.m. The wounded soldiers were treated for superficial wounds in a hospital in Guimbal, Iloilo and were later discharged. A civilian identified as Bryan Servano remained in the same hospital.
