Six teams vie for top honors when the 2017 Philippine Ice Hockey tournament unfolds on Wednesday at the SM Megamall ice skating rink in Mandaluyong City.
“This is our thrust which is to prepare and train our future athletes who will compete in the next level,” said Stephanie Henares-Dela Pena on Tuesday during the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City.
Teams from Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, New York and the Philippines are slugging it out for the crown.
Meanwhile, four teams including squad from Canada are participating in the 35-above non-hitting category.
Tournament director Francois Gautier said that they will impose International Hockey Federation rules and regulations in the tournament.
Gautier added the Philippine national team can gauge the performance of some of their Southeast Asia rivals here as they prepare for the the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in August 19 to 30 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“We will play hard and contest for our goal,” said Gautier, citing Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are the teams to beat in the competition.
Also present in the weekly forum were ice skating champions Skye Chua and Gabby Panlilio. Both skaters pocketed the gold medal in the basic novice A and B of the recently concluded SEA Challenge in Cebu City.
