Defending champion Cebu Country Club will begin their title defense as the 67th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Men’s Interclub Championship tees-off today at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Bacolod.
Cebu Country Club is actually aiming for a ‘three-peat’ while missing the services of aces Mark Dy and Lloyd Jefferson Go. The squad would likely depend on old hands Ramontito Garcia, Carl Almario and Eric Deen.
Dy turned professional just weeks after Cebu nipped Alabang last year. Go, on the other hand, who won the national amateur championship at Wack Wack East last month, is in the United States on a golf scholarship.
Other favorites include Alabang, which will again attempt to grab its first championship division crown, led by Andres Saldana and a host of teen members.
Saldana is coming off a close second place finish to Rupert Zaragosa in the 19th WExpress-DHL tournament at Canlubang North last week. He would get support from a young Alabang squad that has Justin Quiban, Basti Lorenzo and Gabriel Manotoc.
Southwoods, the perennial title contender just several years back, will be spearheaded by former pro Antonio Asistio and veteran Jun Jun Plana. Orchard also looks formidable with veteran internationalist John Kier Abdon and the seasoned player King Stehmeier leading the squad.
Del Monte, with the products of its grassroots program getting better by the year, is also a force to contend with. The Bukidnon-based squad also sent its mainstays to Canlubang last week with Magno Arancon finishing third by nine shots.
This year’s Interclub is being co-sponsored by CrossOver with Boeing, Philippine Graphic, Stargate Media (People Asia) and Rogue as corporate backers. Also lending support are Airbus, Business Mirror, One Mega Group (Travel Now), Philippine Broadcasting Corporation, Manila Broadcasting Corporation, Petron and Manila Bulletin.
