7 killed in Cavite ambush on election day

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna: Seven people were killed and one was wounded in an ambush in Rosario, Cavite, early Monday morning, Sr. Supt. Eliseo Cruz, provincial director, said.

The victims were identified as Amron Sharief, Fabil Magandia, Imam Omail, Imam Ebrahim, Imam Farhan, Imam Rakiin, and Ramon Tuazon. Fatar Mampon survived and was taken to a hospital in Cavite.

Those who died and the one who survived were all from Mindanao in southern Philippines, and residents of a Muslim community in the municipality of Rosario.
Cruz said the victims were on board a Mitsubishi Adventure with plate number URQ 913 and two motorcycles when they were flagged down by a group of still unidentified armed men at 12 a.m. along DP Jimenez St., Brgy. Wawa 3.

Residents near the scene heard at least 15 successive shots as the suspects fired on the victims at close range.

The police are investigating the incident.

Rosario Mayor Nonong Ricafrente, meanwhile, said the victims were all his volunteers, who had been tasked to check out the area involving allegations of vote-buying activity that was happening there.

Rosario was earlier declared as an area of concern due to intense political rivalry among local candidates, who are all vying for elective posts in today’s synchronized local and national elections. ROSELLE AQUINO
