Tacloban City: A huge fire, reportedly caused by a wayward firework (kwitis) welcomed the New Year in this city that razed down 70 houses leaving 84 families homeless in Brgy. 56 Pericohon, a quarter past midnight on Thursday.

Tacloban City Fire head, Chief Insp. Charlie Gerzon said the fire started at around 12: 15 a.m. that reached second alarm and was totally put out at around three in the morning.

Damage was estimated at P2 million but no report of casualty.

Gerzon said they had a hard time putting off the fire because of the narrow passage to the area and a number of residents were injured while trying to save some belongings from their burning houses.

The fire reportedly started at the second floor of the house of Salvacion Maurillo that quickly spread to the neighboring houses, which were mostly made from light materials.

Most of the victims were evacuated at the social center of the Redemptorist church here that serves as permanent shelter for fire victims in the area.

It was the third fire to hit the said residential area in the last three years. Firemen said fire hit the area before Election Day in 2013 and in 2014.
