• 71 Itogon miners rescued

SEVENTY-ONE miners trapped for over eight hours in a collapsed private mine site in Itogon, Benguet were rescued by a team from Benguet Corp. over the weekend.

Lawyer Froilan Roger Lawilao, Benguet Corp. administration department head, said the trapped small-scale miners–68 men and three women–are members of the Dalicno Miners Association operating a private mine tunnel in Barangay Dalicno.

The rescued miners were safety retrieved after over four hours of extensive manual digging from an underground plug-up area and brought to the Balatoc clinic for medical examination.

A member of the council of elders and residents of Dalicno reported to Benguet Corp. management that a huge number of miners were trapped in their private tunnel adjacent to the company’s controlled underground mining area.

According to Lawilao, members of the rescue team had to open the plug-up area connecting the underground working area to be able to pinpoint the location of the trapped miners.

Itogon is one of the mineral-rich areas in Benguet that continues to host various large and small-scale mining operations and being eyed as one of the potential Mina-hang Bayan areas.
