79 Pinochet agents charged in communists’ deaths


SANTIAGO: A Chilean judge has charged 79 former intelligence agents with the disappearance and death of eight Communist Party activists during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Among those charged is the former head of the National Intelligence Directorate, Manuel Contreras, who already is serving several life sentences for crimes against humanity. More than 3,200 people were killed or “disappeared” during the 1973-1990 Pinochet dictatorship, and 28,000 underwent torture.
