Eight tankers from Bicol Region led by Albay Falcons standouts James Peter Her¬nandez and Emmanuel Adornado have qualified to the 2017 Summer World University Games to be held in Taipei, Taiwan.

Hernandez and Adornado were selected based on their sterling performances in the 82nd Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series – El Presidente Swim Cup held at the Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Pool in Legazpi City.

Also making it to the list were Abegail Abareta and Zinder Isaac of St. Agnes Academy, Arnauld Ar¬nal¬do, Ashley Marie Rances and Matthew Tomas Tan of Iba¬long Maga¬yon Aquag¬liders, and another Albay Falcons tanker Benedict James Soliman.

University of the Philippines’ Trisha Oliveros and Cavite Sailfish Swimming Club’s Aubrey Ybanez were also present in the Bicol Leg but they already earned Universiade berths during the 80th PSL National Series held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

“The Philippine Swimming League is preparing this early to be able to give chance to as many swimmers as we can to experience the amazing World Universiade Games 2017 to be held in Taipei,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

In the 2015 Universiade held in Gwangju, South Korea, the PSL sent 48 blessed tankers.

“We want to maximize our participation in Taiwan Universiade. Gusto namin bigyan ng tsansa ang mga bata na mai-represent ang bansa natin sa isang malaking event gaya ng Universiade,” stressed Papa.

The PSL National Series will resume next week in Manila with the staging of the 83rd edition at the Diliman Preparatory School in Quezon City. The event is open to all swimmers from National Capital Region and nearby provinces, who want to qua¬¬lify to the Taiwan Universiade.

The tournament also offers slots for international competitions like the 2015 Royal Bangkok Swim Meet, 2016 Phuket Invitational Swimming Championship and the 2016 Indian Ocean All Star Challenge in Perth, Australia.

The PSL is a national sports swimming association for Universities and Colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (Fessap), internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
