Eight veteran Filipino campaigners barged into the Last 32 of the prestigious World 9-Ball Championships being held at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
They are Antonio Gabica, Israel Rota, Lee Van Corteza, Jeff de Luna, Dennis Orcollo, Ramil Gallego, Carlo Biado and Marlon Manalo who defeated their respective first-round opponents in the knockout stage.
Gabica ousted Nguyen Anh Tuan of Vietnam, 11-8; Rota toppled compatriot Mark Anthony, 11-8; Corteza thumped Manuel Gama of Portugal, 11-7; de Luna outplayed Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 11-9; Orcollo hurdled past Cheng Yu Hsuan of Taiwan, 11-10; Gallego nipped Enrique Rojas of Chile, 11-8; Biado stunned Ralf Souquet of Germany, 11-5; and Manalo outclassed Omar Al Shaheen of Kuwait 11-5;
Former champions Efren “Bata” Reyes and Alex Pagulayan as well as Marlon Caneda and Raymund Faraon, however, were booted out in the tournament sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association.
Reyes lost to Nick Van den Berg of the Netherland, 5-11, Pagulayan bowed to Mika Immonen of Finland, 6-11, Caneda succumbed to Karl Boyes of Great Britain, 10-11, and Faraon was beaten by Lo Li Wen of Taiwan, 4-11.
In the Last 32, Gabica battles Oliver Ortmann of German, Rota faces Lo Li Wen, Corteza meets Daryl Peach of Great Britain, de Luna takes on Mohammed Zulfikri of Indonesia, Orcollo tackles John Morra of Canada, Gallego fights Chris Melling of Great Britain, Biado clashes with Shane Van Boening of US, and Manalo collides with Fabio Petroni of Italy.
The Last 32, Last 16 and the quarterfinal matches were all scheduled on Thursday.
