• 80 FAMILIES BARRED FROM RETURNING TO ESTANCIA

    ILOILO CITY: Almost two months after the Estancia oil spill, 80 families still remain at the tent city in the campus of the Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College in Estancia pending the findings of a team dispatched by the Department of Health (DOH) on its environmental effects on their hometown. The oil spill from a leaking power barge in Barangay Botongan in Estancia, Iloilo has caused an estimated P5.5 million in economic and environmental losses. The oil spill victims in have sued the government-owned Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) and the National Power Corp. (Napocor) and demanded over P300 million in compensation and damages. They asked the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 66 to grant them P100 million in moral damages, P100 million exemplary damages, P100,000 litigation cost, and P20 million actual damages.
