• 90-MINUTE FIREFIGHT LEAVES SOLDIER DEAD

    CATANAUAN, Quezon: An Army soldier, PFC Denopol, died from multiple gunshot wounds in a 90-minute encounter between government troops and alleged members of the New People Army (NPA) Friday morning, around 8.15 at Sitio Pangi, Barangay Doongan Ilaya of this town. In a report to Solcom Chief LTGen Caesar Ronnie Ordoyo, two squads from the Bravo Company of 74th “Unbeatable” Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Philippine Army were conducting Internal Peace and Security Operation in the area when they chanced upon more or less 30 fully-armed guerrilla fighters. A 90-minute gunfire ensued that led to the death of PFC Denopol and the wounding of still undetermined number from the NPA fighters, based on the blood trails when they fled to different directions. The government troops are now in hot pursuit operations. Recovered from the scene of the encounter include undetonated explosive materials, makeshift tents and personal belongings.
