THE $81 million Bangladesh Bank heist in February 2016 was the single largest bank robbery in history, and if it had been completely successful, the $951 million the unknown thieves attempted to steal would have made it the biggest robbery of anything, ever. At a minimum the plot involved, directly or indirectly, people and institutions in at least six different countries, no fewer than six commercial banks, and four central banks. It took 10 days to carry out, and was evidently in planning for at least nine months prior to being launched, with preparations that included an apparent dress rehearsal at the targeted bank a month before the actual attack.
