The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) will be sending its four young boxers in Sofia, Bulgaria to compete in the prestigious 2014 World Youth Boxing Championships on April 10 to 25.
The ABAP has selected Daniel Maano (light flyweight), Hipolito Banal (flyweight), Fresco Carpocia (bantamweight) and Sonny Bernabe (light welterweight) to represent the country in the world meet.
More than 50 countries are expected to join the event including powerhouse Cuba, China, United States, Thailand, South Korea, among others.
The four boxers are aiming to earn spots in the 2nd Youth Olympic Games since the tournament will also serve as a qualifying tournament.
The Youth Olympics will be held in Nanjing, China on August 16 to 28.
The ABAP focuses on its grassroots development program in an effort to produce world-class boxers for future international tournaments including the Olympic Games.
Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, a Panabo City native, is one of the products of the ABAP’s talent identification program nationwide. Barriga is currently training in Italy under the Italia Thunder.
