Following the travel advisory of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) announced that its boxers would not join the 2014 Asian Youth Championships set January 24 to 31 in Bangkok, Thailand.
ABAP executive-director Ed Picson said that the decision came after the DFA issued Crisis Alert Level 2 following the declaration of state emergency by the Thai government in some areas of Thailand.
“We hope that our apprehensions are eventually proven unfounded, we choose to be safe rather than sorry. These are young boys aged 17 to 18 years old and we cannot risk their safety,” said ABAP president Ricky Vargas.
Among those supposedly seeing action in the tourney that would as a preparation for the 2014 World Youth Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria in April, are light flyweight Dannel Maamo, flyweight Hipolito Banal, bantamweight Presco Carcosia and welterweight Sammy Bernabe Jr.
The Bulgaria event is a qualifying competition for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in August, according to Picson.
“We’ll have to look for another foreign trip for the boys to give them exposure before Bulgaria”, Vargas said.
