BOXING icon Manny Pacquiao is being considered by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines Inc. (ABAP) to become one of its board members. The new ABAP, headed by Ricky Vargas, has changed its name, dropping the word “amateur” as mandated by the International Boxing Association.

ABAP Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas are expected to run unopposed in the new AIBA’s first general assembly and election at the Quezon City Sports Club on Friday.

“If we are to continue our involvement in boxing, we need to make sure the stakeholders themselves want us there. And the best way to determine that is to go through the election process. We want our leadership validated,” Vargas said.

ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson said that Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Emmanuel Bautista was also allotted a seat in the ABAP board.
