• Abe pledges $780M in aid to visiting Abbas

TOKYO (Japan Times): Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday offered $780 million in fresh humanitarian assistance to visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, renewing his vow to support the Middle East peace process amid yet another period of tension. Funded by the supplementary budget, the aid will be used for food, medical supplies, and financial assistance to the Palestinian government through international organizations. Abbas’ visit comes at a crucial time for the Middle East peace process, which has been stalled since April 2014. Tensions between the Palestinians and Israelis have been escalating since a conflict broke out in the Gaza Strip in July 2014.Then-French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on January 29 proposed an international peace conference but stepped down from his post soon thereafter.
