CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet: Vote buyers, including those taking money from politicians, were cautioned as Abra police warned they will arrest anyone caught engaged in illegal activities.
Abra police director Senior Supt. Antonio Bartolome said they will strictly enforce the law as soon as the campaign period for local positions starts on March 25.
Police admitted that it is common knowledge that P5,000 cash is being dangled to voters, but “it is still not considered vote buying because it is not election period yet,” Bartolome explained.
Alleged vote buying activities, believed started several weeks ago, is being monitored in various towns in the province, Bartolome said.
An account of vote buying in Abra, specifically in Pidigan town, was documented on March 10 and uploaded on Facebook where five pieces of P1,000 bills were allegedly given together with a leaflet containing the names of congressional bet Joselito Bringas; incumbent Rep. Joy Bernos for governor; Ronald Balao-as for vice governor; Domino Valera (brother of Bernos); Darlito Dumlao for vice mayor and eight others for the municipal council.
Bernos belied the alleged vote buying brushing aside the issue as part of black propaganda being hurled against her.
