BAGUIO CITY: In efforts to sustain Abra’s status as a malaria-free province and in observance of World Malaria Day on April 25, the Provincial Health Office conducted Malaria Sustainability and Point Person’s meeting recently in Bangued, Abra. PHO Malaria Program coordinator Dr. Lilibeth B. Martin told municipal health officers and representatives from line agencies not to be complacent even after attaining malaria-free status since other neighboring provinces can become vector transmitters. Abra is the second province after Benguet to be declared as malaria-free in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Other provinces are still in the elimination phase. The presence of vulnerable groups and mobile population like overseas workers, miners and soldiers is also a risk to being malaria-free, she added. Continued implementation of surveillance activities in around 303 villages to prevent malaria reintroduction in Abra must be done.
