BAGUIO CITY: A village leader of a mayoralty bet in Abra town was slain on Sunday, a belated police report said. The first victim of political violence, barely two weeks before the May 9 polls, is Mercedita Beronilla Bragas, a village leader of San Juan mayoralty bet lawyer Russel Bragas of the National Unity Party (NUP). Bragas, also a distant relative of the candidate, was found bathed in her own blood at a pasture land in Sitio Alismogan, Barangay Abualan in San Juan town. Abra police Director Senior Supt. Antonio Bartolome said villagers heard gunfire at about 8 a.m. on Sunday, but the killing was only reported to the police around noon. Four empty shells of an M-16 assault rifle were found at the crime scene. La Paz mayor Joseph Sto. Niño Bernos, chief of the NUP in Abra, denounced the dastardly killing and called on the police to leave no stone be unturned to ferret out the truth and serve justice to the family of Bragas.
