• Abu Sayyaf kidnap suspect arrested

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Authorities have arrested a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group involved in the 2011 kidnapping of a Filipino-American woman and her son in Zamboanga City.

Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman, said Wajir Arijani alias Abu Miqtad is being interrogated following his capture in a hideout in Santa Catalina village here.

He said Arijani was involved in the kidnapping of Gerfa Yeatts Lunsmann and her son Kevin on July 2011 in their beach house in Zamboanga City.

“The arrest was made after a long period of pursuit and surveillance operations by the intelligence community,” Samuddin said.

Arijani is a member of the Abu Sayyaf group under Puruji Indama in the neighboring province of Basilan and is also included in the wanted list of the police.

Gerfa and her son—who were on a holiday when kidnapped—were separately freed in Basilan after reportedly paying the ransom.

Lunsmann was born in Mindanao but was adopted by an American couple. She grew up in the United States where she worked as a veterinarian.
