Officials have confirmed the attack and that troops were dispatched to track down the rebels in Sumisip town where the abductions occurred.

1st Lt. Sally Magno, of the army’s joint task force group in Basilan, said the victims were construction workers heading to their job site when rebels intercepted them.

The truck was transporting nine workers, but the two managed to escape. They subsequently informed authorities about the abduction.

According to reports forwarded to the PNP National Operation Center in Camp Crame, the victims were aboard a truck driven by a certain Sadidul when the Abu Say- yaf Group waylaid and seized them.

The military did not release the names of the victims. Last month, the Abu Sayyaf beheaded a hostage, Rodolfo Buligao, chairman of Barangay Aliguay Island in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.
