Import LaDontae Henton led the Alaska Aces to an 85-69 win over the Star Hotshots on Saturday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Governors’ Cup at the Panabo Multi-Purpose Tourism Cultural and Sports Center in Davao del Norte.
Henton finished with 27 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while forward Calvin Abueva had 10 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
The victory improved the Aces’ win-loss record to 2-4.
Center Nonoy Baclao contributed eight points while Sonny Thoss had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks also for the Aces.
Alaska recorded more triples (7-2) assists (20-7), steals (7-0) and blocks (9-5) than the Hotshots.
After trailing behind, 16-18, at the end of first quarter, the Aces unleashed an 11-0 run in the second period that resulted in a 27-18 lead with still 7:28 to go before the halftime break.
The Aces scored 25 points in the second period while employing defense to limit the Hotshots’ output to only seven points in that same quarter. RJ Jazul, who had five points, extended Alaska’s lead, 41-25, at halftime after scoring a triple.
The Hotshots outscored the Aces, 25-16 at the end of third frame to narrow the gap, 50-57. They managed to reduce the deficit further, 59-64, in the early going of the last period but the Aces used sharp shooting to reclaim the lead in double-digit. Alaska was not threatened from that point on.
Replacement import Joel Wright posted 30 points and 22 rebounds while Ryan Roose Garcia had 15 points to lead the Star Hotshots. The team is now at the bottom of the team standings with a 1-5 win-loss record.
Meanwhile, Mahindra and Barangay Ginebra will try to recover from their previous losses when they compete against separate foes today at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Enforcers will meet the Blackwater Elite at 4:30 p.m. while the Gin Kings and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will clash at 6:45 p.m.
