LJ Reyes, of the GMA Network Kapuso talent pool, and ABS-CBN actor John Lloyd Cruz won as Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively, at the 39th Gawad Urian Awards, held at the Kia Theater, in Quezon City, on Wednesday night.
Reyes was recognized for her role as a wife with a complex relationship with her husband in “Anino sa Likod ng Buwan” (Shadow Behind the Moon) while Cruz won for his starring role in Erick Matti’s drama-thriller, “Honor Thy Father.”
Jerrold Tarog, in the meantime, was adjudged Best Director for “Heneral Luna,” a historical biopic depicting the life and leadership of General Antonio Luna during the Philippine-American revolution toward the end of the 19th century.
Brillante Mendoza’s “Taklub” (Trap) won as Best Picture. The movie is a portrait of three surviving families a year after Supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck their hometown of Tacloban, in the central Philippine province of Leyte.
The event, hosted by Iza Calzado, Zoren Legaspi and Butch Francisco, also announced the other winners:

Best Screenplay – Robby Tantingco (ARI: My Life with a King)
Best Short Film – Wawa
Best Documentary – The Crescent Rising
Best Cinematography – Pong Ignacio (Heneral Luna)
Best Production Design – Ben Payumo (Water Lemon)
Best Editing – Jerrold Tarog (Heneral Luna)
Best Music – Jake Abella (ARI: My Life with a King)
Best Sound – Mikko Quizon (Heneral Luna)
