Adamson University made history as it won its first championship in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) cheerdance competition on Saturday at the packed Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Adamson Pep Squad’s 80s theme highlighted by crisp tosses, somersaults and towering pyramids garnered 663.5 points to the delight of the crowd.
It was the second straight podium finish for the Soaring Falcons who finished third last year.
“I’m totally speechless. It was a great feeling. It feels like winning more than the gold,” Adamson head coach Jeremy Lorenzo said in tears.
Adamson bagged the P340,000 top prize plus the P50,000 Best Pyramid award. It also seized the silver medal in the Group Stunts contest. “The team sacrificed a lot for this. Half of them are rookies,” added Lorenzo.
University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe finished second with 638.5 points for the P200,000 prize.
University of the East (UE) Pep Squad finished third with 634.5 to bring home P140,000. It was the first podium finish for UE since 2002.
The National University (NU) Pep Squad, who failed on its five-peat bid, finished fifth together with the Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad that also earned 610.5 points.
Returning University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad finished sixth—the first time the State U did not make it to the podium. The De La Salle University Animo Squad followed with 567.5 points.
The Ateneo De Manila University Blue Babble Battalion finished last for the fifth straight year with 558.5 points.
FEU won the gold in Group Stunts while UP got the silver. NU received P30,000 for the Best Toss plum.
