Adamson University outlasted University of Santo Tomas (UST), 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 28-30, 16-14, to book its first win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Open hitter Jessica Galanza scored a career-high 28 points highlighted by 25 attacks as the Lady Falcons joined defending champion Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines on top with 1-0.
“We didn’t give up, we didn’t stop. Basta kami laban lang tulung-tulong kami, nakikinig lang kami sa sinasabi ng coach namin. Magandang panalo ito sa amin para mas ma-boost pa ang morale namin sa mga susunod naming laro,” said Galanza.
Utility spiker Mylene Paat backed her up with 19 points while sophomore May Roque contibuted 13 and Erika Alkuino added seven points.
Former beach volleyball champion Cherry Rondina also had a career-high 30-point showing while EJ Laure scored 15 and Ria Meneses dropped 13 points for the Tigresses, who fell to 0-1 mark.
In the men’s division, De La Salle University and National University (NU) opened their bids on high notes by scoring straight-set victories against their respective rivals.
Raymark Woo nailed 19 points, and John Arjay Onia and Ralph Calasin combined for 27 points to power the Green Archers to a 25-18 28-26, 26-24 win over University of the East.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand walloped Adamson. 25-22, 25-22, 25-7, behind the efforts of James Martin and Bryan Bagunas, who scored 11 points each.
La Salle and NU created a four-way tie on top with defending champion Ateneo and Far Eastern University with 1-0 apiece.
