HOST Adamson University nipped University of the Philippines (UP), 79-67, on Sunday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Guard Jericho Cruz paced the Falcons with 19 points along with six rebounds and three steals, while the frontline combination of 6’8 Cameroonian Ingrid Sewa and 6’5 John Brondial also did a lot of damage to the Fighting Maroons.
Sewa tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds and Brondial registered nine points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, who simply out-rebounded the Fighting Maroons, 53-29.
“We just did what the coach’s instructions,” said Cruz, who tallied eight points in the first half to give Adamson an early 36-28 lead after two quarters. “Everybody contributed.”
After first quarter, the Falcons took an 18-13 lead before extending the gap to 11 in the second period. UP came out scorching in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 33-38 on Joseph Marata’s three-pointer with 8:45 left.
“Sewa’s arrival is very beneficial to our team. Brondial slid to his natural position,” said Adamson mentor Leo Austria. “I’m happy also that my players were able to execute the game plan properly. I’m hoping we do the same thing when we play UST next week.”
Marata scored 20 points for UP.
In the second game, National University outclassed defending champion Ateneo de Manila University, 64-54, to earn its first win this season. Ateneo fell to 0-1 mark.
