BG Productions owned by Baby Go may not be as well known or popular like Regal Films, Viva or Star Cinema, but the four-year-old film outfit is determined to make a mark in the entertainment industry with advocacy films that have been winning awards in various film festivals abroad.
BG Productions started making movies in 2013 with two indie projects – Lihis, which starred Jake Cuenca, Joem Bascon and Lovi Poe under the direction of Joel Lamangan, and Lauriana directed by Mel Chionglo featuring Allen Dizon and Bangs Garcia in the lead roles. Allen won a Best award for Lauriana from Gawad Pasado, and Bangs the Best Actress plum. The film also garnered a Grade A from the Cinema Evaluation Board. On the other hand, Lihis scored big a success at the box-office.
Those early triumphs were enough to boost the confidence of the lady producer to continue making movies. But of course, we all know that movie-making in our country is not really a lucrative business. Unless your production is backed by a major network (like ABS-CBN for Star Cinema), it is very hard to recoup money invested in a movie.
In our past interviews with Go, she often said she is content if the movie she produces makes a little profit good enough to bankroll another project. Besides, she wants to help “little people” (the production staff) to be employed.
And to further show her willingness to be a major force as producer in the years to come, Go also decided to discover and sign up her own stable of stars who were presented in a gathering for the media last week.
The contract stars of BG Productions were selected after several auditions done by Go and her stable of directors like Joel Lamangan, Mel Chionglo, Buboy Tan, Louie Ignacio and Jason Paul Laxaman among others.
The 10 newbies are Cebuano hunk James Robert (who plays one of the leads in Balatkayo as the son of Aiko Melendez); Japanese hunk Alexis Yasuda who won an Aliw Award for Best Actor in a feature role and was given a scholarship for film and Theater at University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA; Kristine Barretto who will be introduced in Balatkayo; Erika Yu who played a featured role in Child Haus and in Laut as the sister of Barbie Forteza; Wynona Calderon from Cavite who is a veteran of stage plays); half-Italian Yvonne Aresu who is an experienced model at the age of 15; Jay Verona from Davao who won first runner-up in Mr. Golden Universe held in Brazil; child actor Rafferty Manansala; and Francis Garde.
Go told these new stars that making it in showbiz does not rely solely on the one handling their careers but also rests also on their talent, attitude, discipline and luck. Faith in God and prayers can also help fulfill their dreams.
“We will give them our best effort and we hope that success will come their way at the right time. BG Productions will be very happy if they become stars in the future,” said the lady producer.
