The damage to the farm sector by Tropical Depression Agaton reached P266.6 million and affected more than 35,080 hectares in Mindanao, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Thursday.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said that as of Thursday, agriculture losses were reported in four regions following heavy rains and flooding
Alcala said the rice sector suffered the biggest damage at P152.6 million, followed by corn at P100.9 million and banana at P6.3 million.
Rice losses reached 1,713 metric tons (MT) in 20,444 hectares. Of these, some 14,783 hectares still have chances of recovery since the majority of the palay planted were still at the vegetative stage.
The report showed that Region 10 and 11 suffered the biggest loss in terms of palay with P48.3 million and P73.5 million, respectively.
A total 6,983 MT of corn were lost in some 9,685 hectares of corn plantations. Of the total areas affected by the weather system, 9,391 hectares still have a chance of recovery and only 294 hectares were totally damaged.
Region 11 also suffered the biggest hit with P95.5-million worth of corn crops damaged.
Meanwhile, the banana sector suffered losses of 406 MT in 4,862 hectares.
