After homegrown mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Dave “The Scarecrow” Galera was defeated by Singaporean Royston Wee in his debut fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on January 4, Alvin Aguilar, the Father of MMA in the Philippines, hopes to see another Filipino talent, Eric “The Natural” Kelly enter the Octagon.
“UFC should try Kelly, the best of URCC [Universal Reality Combat Championship] after signing Galera. He [Kelly] is an all-around fighter and very skilful. I’m confident Kelly could represent our country also in the UFC,” Aguilar told The Manila Times.
Aguilar is the founder of URCC, the first professional MMA league in the Philippines.
Kelly, who holds a 10-1 win-loss record in the URCC has a vast background in muay thai, wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He defeated former UFC champion Jens Pulver via technical knockout in One FC in August 2012 to win the featherweight title and Australian Brad Terrey via armbar in URCC Dekada in December 2012.
Kelly lost his One FC title after absorbing a technical knockout from his compatriot Honorio “The Rock” Banario in February 2013.
After an eight-month hiatus, the Baguio native Kelly returned in November to beat Chinese fighter Jianbo Lu via armbar in URCC Uprising.
