Power forward Japeth Aguilar fired 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Barangay Ginebra scored an 81-74 win over Rain or Shine in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 42 Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Gin Kings, riding on Aguilar’s 9-of-13 shooting in the field, relied on their solid frontline to overcome a disappointing 0-of-14 attempts beyond the arc en route to first win after two games. Joe Devance added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the field plus eight rebounds also for Ginebra.
“Those games when you go up and down those were fun and easy,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone during the post game interview. “We talked about how to grind out a win. Against Talk ‘N Text, we didn’t play with a lot of humility when we do that we don’t play to our identity.”
Center Raymond Almazan posted 13 points and 15 rebounds, while two-time Most Valuable Player winner James Yap added 10 points for Rain or Shine. It was Rain or Shine’s first loss in three games.
Ginebra recorded more assists than Rain or Shine (26-11) despite being out rebounded (58-65).
