THE Office of the Ombudsman has filed graft and malversation charges against Mayor Dale Corvera of Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte for alleged misuse of public funds.
In filing the case before the Sandiganbayan, the anti-graft body said Corvera was found to have charged his personal travel expenses amounting to P362,154.85 against the city funds from May 2011 to June 2014.
“These personal travel expenses included detour trips to Cebu City to visit his children, including the personal hotel accommodations and meals of his wife,” the Ombudsman said in a statement issued on Friday.
Corvera explained that the travels were made “in connection with his attendance to the activities of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP).”
But the Office of the Ombudsman ruled that the BSP’s public character cannot serve as valid justification to charge against public funds the expenses incurred for attending its activities.
“All documents are clear enough to show that expenses have been spent, and the nature of such expenses,” it said in a resolution.
“(A)s the chief executive of the city of Cabadbaran, respondent exercises control over the city’s funds and is accountable for them,” the Ombudsman added.
