DONNIE “Ahas” Nietes scored a third round technical knockout against Mexican challenger Sammy Gutierrez in Pinoy Pride 23: Filipinos kontra Latinos at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Nietes, 31, finished the fight with a solid left followed by a devastating right cross to retain the World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight title. Referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the fight with 2:58 left in the third round.
After the fight Nietes issued a warning against his next challenger Moses Fuentes, “Moses [Fuentes] I’m coming for you,” Nietes, who improved to 32-1-4 win-loss-draw record with 18 knockouts, told reporters during a post-fight interview. “I know I can do this also to Fuentes and I hope he’ll prepare a lot too when we meet again.”
Nietes and Fuentes, whose last fight ended in a majority draw in March, were ordered by the WBO to meet in a rematch most likely in February 2014, in Singapore or any neutral venue.
Meanwhile, Merlito “The Tiger” Sabillo pulled off a controversial split draw against unbeaten Nicaraguan Carlos Buitrago to retain his WBO minimum weight crown.
