WORLD Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes has arrived in San Diego, California, USA, to resume his training for his rematch against Mexican Moses Fuentes. The match is set tentatively in May in a yet to be determined venue.
Nietes announced via text message that he is presently training with other Filipino boxers among them WBO minimum weight champion Merlito Sabillo, Genesis Servania and Milan Melindo.
ALA Promotion President Michael Aldeguer said that Nietes (32-1-4 win-loss-draw record with 18 knockouts) would spar with different boxers in the US and Mexico to polish his game.
“We need to send them in the US because if we just stay here, nothing will happen,” said Aldeguer. “All boxers including our opponents are getting stronger and improving that’s why our boxers should also train overseas to improve their craft. They need exposure outside the country.”
Trainer Edito Villamor accompanies Nietes.
Known for his crisp strikes and impressive counter-punching, the Bacolod boxer scored a third round technical knockout win over Mexican Sammy Gutierrez in November in Manila.
The fight between Nietes and Fuentes (19-1-1 slate with 10 knockouts) in March 2013 in Cebu City ended in a draw.
