Will this equation rule in the prime time ratings game?
As the Enrique Gil-Liza Soberano tandem lords over the prime time ratings with the thrill of young love in Forevermore, will ABS-CBN finally have a battle in their hands with the Monday premiere of GMA Network’s Let the Love Begin?
The answer is: They just might.
Let the Love Begin is Comedy Queen AiAi delas Alas’ first big project for TV since leaving her 14-year stretch as a prime talent of ABS-CBN this month. It was only last week when she signed a contract with GMA Network—billed a “homecoming” since she was previously with the station for nine equally long years—and already, her mother studio has pushed her front and center of the war zone.
A smart move by the Kapuso Network, they do show that they treat their artists with a heart for they haven’t left the entire burden of the show on the blockbuster comedienne. They have cast their strongest young love team in Ruru Madrid and Gabi Garcia as the “kilig” drawer of the series. To be fair, the young actors have steadily established a following on GMA Network after playing supporting characters in the Carla Abellana-Tom Rodriguez soap, My Destiny. Then again, fast-rising as they are, they have yet to come close to the frenzied appeal of the Enrique-Liza jackpot.
Thus, in the overall scheme of things, they have more to gain as part of the Comedy Queens opening salvo for GMA.
In Let the Love Begin, Ai-Ai de plays the role of Jeni, the hip and cool radio DJ mother of Ruru’s Erick, who in turn is the childhood friend of Gabbi’s Pia. Pia, on the other hand is the daughter of Jeni’s best friend and co-DJ Tony, portrayed by Gardo Versoza.
Jeni and Tony are best friends who are part of a radio program that gives advices on love and life. Jeni is an independent woman has a live-in boyfriend, Enrico (Joko Diaz), and has two kids by him, Erick and Elsa (Ar Angel Angeles). Meanwhile, Tony is a widower, and his unica hija Pia is a certified daddy’s girl.
A major problem will destroy Jeni and Tony’s strong bond of friendship, and after so many years, Jeni and Tony will cross paths once again when Pia and Erick fall in love.
On Thursday night, Let the Love Begin’s grand press conference obviously had AiAi as the center of attention and when asked whether she feels the pressure of headlining a prime time series so soon, she calmly replied, “Hindi naman. Wala na akong pressure [na nararamdaman ngayon]. Isa ‘yon sa mga rason kaya lumipat ako. Gusto ko ng relaxed, chill lang [na working environment].
“Modesty aside, ayoko nang may patunayan pa—ito na ‘yon,” she added. “Gusto ko na lang ng happy work, happy ambiance, at positive lahat. No to negatrons!”
Hopefully, AiAi’s attitude will bring in the numbers to cut short the reign of Forevermore.
Let the Love Begin premieres May 4 right after Pari ‘Koy on GMA Telebabad. It is directed by Gina Alajar with a script by Agnes Gagelonia.
