A transport driver who was recently commended for returning a laptop to its owner was nabbed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 in connection with a murder that happened 14 years ago. Alex Esquillon, 47, of Sorsogon province, was waiting for his turn to pick up passengers at NAIA 2 when lawmen pounced on him on Wednesday afternoon. During questioning at the aviation police station, Esquillon said he was unaware that the warrant for his arrest issued by Baguio City Regional Trial Court Judge Ruben Ayson in 2001 is still in effect. He added that he frequents Baguio because he has relatives there. “Ang alam ko wala na, dahil nakakauwi naman ako sa mga kamag-anak ko sa Baguio. [What I know is that the warrant of arrest is not valid anymore because I am able to go to Baguio often to visit my relatives],” he said. As far as he knows, Esquillon added, one of the suspects had already been arrested and convicted. According to ASSI transport operations manager Nick Caberoy, Esquillon had been serving as a driver for the transport company for almost a year. Caberoy said they accepted Esquillon because he had National Bureau of Investigation and police clearances.
