The Alaska Aces cruised to a 106 – 80 win over the Blackwater Elite in the season opener of the 2015 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Alaska’s bench recorded 53 points getting notable contributions from Chris Banchero, Calvin Abueva, and RJ Jazul. The Aces scored 26 points from 21 Blackwater turnovers while dominating the paint scoring 56-30. Banchero was also named player of the game for his 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in 22 minutes off the bench.
In the first half, Aces led by as much as 17 points capitalizing on 12 Blackwater turnovers. The Alaska bench was on fire early scoring 27 points. Banchero and Abueva combined for 16.
Alaska continued hammering away in the third quarter leading by 35 points with three minutes left. Blackwater was limited to just five points before they went on a 10–0 scoring run, cutting the lead to 25. The Aces finished the third leading the Elites 85–58.
Back-and-forth they went in the fourth quarter, but the lead was too much for the Elites to handle.
Romeo Travis was impressive in his PBA debut tallying 18 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in their first victory. Marcus Douthit also recorded a double–double finishing with 28 points and 16 rebounds.
Blackwater will be facing their next opponents, Global Port Batang Pier on Friday followed by the Aces game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
