THE Alaska Aces will try to prove their mastery over San Mig Coffee anew while Rain or Shine hopes for a repeat win over Barako Bull today in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Alaska that escaped with a slim 84-80 win over the Coffee Mixers in their first encounter on November 22, are actually aiming for their fourth victory when they collide at 8 p.m. tonight. Rain or Shine, on the other hand, coming off from a 99-95 overtime win over Petron Blaze on Dec. 21, aims to strengthen its hold of the fourth spot when it faces Barako Bull in the first game at 5:45 p.m.
Coach Yeng Guiao’s Elasto Painters expressed confidence that they can withstand the onslaught of Barako Bull Energy Cola (3-6), whom they defeated 91-83 in their first meeting on December 1.
Coach Tim Cone’s Coffee Mixers are entering the match against Alaska coming from back-to-back victories resulting to a 3-5 win-loss slate; an indication that they have already recovered from the grueling Governor’s Cup championship series.
A win by San Mig would enable them to move into the upper half of the standings and share the fifth spot with Globalport (4-5) behind solo leader Ginebra (8-1), Petron (7-2), Talk ‘N Text (6-2) and Rain or Shine (5-3).
But a loss by the Coffee Mixers could make them plummet to the 8th spot, just a notch higher than cellar dweller Air 21, with a 2-8 record.
