THIRD seed Alaska Aces and no. 5 Meralco Bolts will try to sweep their respective quarterfinals assignment when they face separate foes today in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Alaska will be coming off from a strong 86-77 win over San Mig Coffee in the opening of the best-of-three quarterfinals on Monday. Meralco escaped with a slim 94-91 triumph over Rain or Shine to emerge with a similar 1-0 record.
Coach Luigi Trillo’s Aces take on the Coffee Mixers at 5:45 p.m. while Meralco faces the Elasto Painters at 8 p.m. The winner between Alaska and San Mig Coffee meets the victor between no. 2 seed San Miguel Beer and no. 7 Air 21 Express in the best-of-five semifinals.
On the other hand, Meralco and Rain or Shine are battling for the right to face either top seed Talk ‘N Text or no. 8 qualifier Ginebra San Miguel Kings in the other semifinals battle. Both the Beermen and the Express as well as Tropang Texters and the Kings were still playing at presstime.
“We have been in this situation before but we were not able to close it. Now with more experiences, hopefully we can get through it. We don’t win a best-of-three series by just one victory,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio, well aware of the past scenarios where they were beaten by San Mig Coffee, 1-2, in the same best-of-three quarterfinals of the previous two Commissioner’s cup.
“We will be ready for a big comeback by Rain or Shine. We are expecting it,” stressed Gregorio.
