• Alaska seeks to regain share of top spot

THE Alaska Aces aim to beat 11th front-running NLEX Road Warriors to regain share of top spot while sister teams Talk ‘N Text and Meralco Bolts will collide today in the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay city.

Coach Alex Compton of the Aces expressed confidence on his wards’ capacity to overcome the Road Warriors in their 4:15 p.m. battle as Talk ‘N Text tries to grab a share of the fourth position when it faces Meralco at 7 p.m.

Compton’s optimism was based on the Aces’ 92-86 thumping of Purefoods Star Hotshots on May 27 to maintain its 4-1 record just half a game behind solo leader Barako Bull with a 5-1 card. It was a strong comeback for the squad following its heartbreaking 103-104 loss to Talk ‘N Text on May 18.

Compton would rely anew on import Romeo Travis with 25.6 points and 13 rebounds a game to lead Alaska to victory. Providing Alaska additional firepower are Sonny Thoss, JV Casio, Calvin Abueva, Dondon Hontiveros, Vic Manuel and Cyrus Baguio.

Coach Boyet Fernandez’s Road Warriors, holding a 1-4 record, are locked from 10th to 11th with Rain or Shine. Leading the Road Warriors’ charge are imports Kwame Alexander and Michael Madanly with the support of Asi Taulava, Enrico Villanueva, Mark Cardona and Nino Canaleta.

With a 3-2 card, the Tropang Texters need to win over Meralco in the second game to be able to tie Globalport at the fourth spot (4-2) and strengthen their bid to clinch a twice-to-beat advantage into the quarterfinals.
