Alaska and San Miguel Beer will collide in Game One of the best-of-seven championship round of 40th Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Game time is set at 7:00 p.m.
After his wards’ three-game sweep of the Star Hotshots in the semifinals, Alaska coach Alex Compton is looking forward to guiding the Aces to its 15th overall title.
“San Miguel Beer is a very tough team and also same with Rain or Shine that’s why we need to prepare a lot especially on our defense outside the three-point zone and inside the shaded lane,” Compton told The Manila Times in an interview. “We want to win and nothing else.”
“The San Miguel Beermen also showed how strong they are in this conference,” Compton added. “We must be ready. It’s going to be a hard game from jump ball up to the final buzzer.”
Alaska’s do-it-all reinforcement guy Romeo Travis who averaged 27 points and 16 rebounds a game is expected to lead the Aces with the support of Cyrus Baguio, Calvin Abueva, Vic Manuel, Sonny Thoss, JV Casio and Chris Banchero.
The San Miguel Beermen whore coming off a 3-1 win over Rain or Shine in the semifinals are expected to bank on import Arizona Reid, 6’10 center June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, forward Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot and Ronald Tubid.
“It’s going to be an exciting and tough series. Alaska has Romeo [Travis] and Calvin Abueva that makes them a competitive team,” said SMB import Arizona Reid, who scored 39 points in his previous game against Rain or Shine in the semifinals. “We have to prepare very well.”
Meanwhile, San Miguel Beer’s 6’10 behemoth June Mar Fajardo could win a back-to-back Most Valuable Player trophy after receiving the highest statistical points (37.1) at the end of the Governors’ Cup.
Jayson Castro of Talk ‘N Text (29.09) and Ginebra’s Greg Slaughter (29.07) are second and third respectively.
