Alcantara eliminated in Canada tournament


Filipino tennis player Francis Casey Alcantara ended his campaign at the Canada Futures after losing to American Raleigh Smith, 4-6, 4-6, in the second round on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) at the Aviva Center in Ontario.

Smith’s victory set him up against second seed Canadian Filip Peliwo, who scored a 7-5, 6-2 win over compatriot Samuel Monette.

Meanwhile, top seed Kaichi Uchida Japan marched into the quarterfinal round after pulling off a 6-2, 7-5 win over Canadian Pavel Krainik.

The Japanese, ranked No. 392 in the world, will next meet seventh seed Rhyne Williams, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over compatriot Quinton Vega.

Third seed Takanyi Garanganga and eighth-seeded American Winston Lim also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Garanganga outclassed Mexican Hans Hach, 6-1, 6-1, to advance against Canadian wild card Benjamin Sigouin, who scored a 6-4, 6-2 upset win over sixth seed Ecuadorian Ivan Endara.

Lim on the other hand rallied past Canadian qualifier Serge Becerra, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with another Canadian qualifier, Egor Koleganov, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over American qualifier Mwendwa Mbithi.
