Alcantara, partner advance in ATP Challenger tilt


Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara and Indonesian Christopher Rungkat stunned their top-seeded rivals to advance to the doubles quarterfinals of the $75,000 ATP Challenger at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.

Alcantara and Rungkat posted a 4-6, 7-6 (10) 10-7 come-from behind win over veteran campaigners Ilija Bozoljac of Serbia and Andreas Siljestrom of Sweden.

The Filipino-Indon duo was scheduled to play vs Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland and Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the Round-of-8.

Chiudinelli and Lacko earlier defeated Chinese Gong Mao-Xin and Taiwanese Yi Chu-Huan, 6-4, 6-3.

For reaching the quarterfinals, Alcantara and Rungkat are now assured of $960 cash prize and 17 ATP ranking points.

The winner in the Alcantara-Rungkat Chiudinelli-Lacko match will be facing twin Thai netters Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat Ratiwatanna.

The Ratiwatanas earned the first semifinals spot by ousting Croatians Dino Marcan and Nikola Mektic, 6-4, 6-4.

“It’s not a good day to play because of the windy [condition]but I’m happy that we were able to get through,” said Sonchat.

In singles, No. 7 Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands and Lacko sealed their quarterfinals showdown after trouncing Amir Wintraub of Israel, 6-2, 6-2, and Federico Gaio of Italy, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, respectively.

Italian Gianluca Naso also made it to the Final 8 following his 6-3, 7-6 (4) upset win over fifth seed Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium.

Naso will play against the winner between Yannick Mertens of Belgium and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the tournament which offers $10,800 to the singles champion and $4,650 to the doubles winners.
